The World Stops Because One Person Has Flu
Swine flu is, of course, not something to be taken lightly and none of us would wish to face the situation that Mexicans have faced recently. In the UK, the Government has stockpiled drugs to cope with it and many institutions have closed to avoid the spread of the virus. One such institution is my local school in Downend, Bristol, which closed because one girl came back from holiday in Mexico and tested positive having already returned to lessons.
I accept that, once detected, closing the school was probably the correct decision in spite of the fact that swine flu has proven to be mild in all cases detected so far. However, the school was closed for over a week and this is a busy time of year which includes the lead up to exams so it begs the question "why didn’t anyone stop the girl going to school in the first place? ".
I guess the first question needs to be directed at the parents and why they allowed their daughter to go to school with flu or, if no symptoms were showing, having just come back from Mexico. I’m sure the answer is that they would not have done had they been made fully aware of the situation.
This view is supported by interviews on TV where people arriving on flights back from Mexico to the UK were mingling with passengers from other flights and were not aware of the perceived seriousness of the situation. As an individual country can’t really wholly rely on another and must have its own measures in place, I would put the blame on the airports for not having stricter procedures in force under these circumstances. The Government could, of course, enforce stricter procedures and indeed I hope they will do by the next time a pandemic is threatened. They were lucky to get away with it this time (so far! ).
