Of course we're going to say our site is best! It's free and simplistic in comparison to the larger sites, so is hopefully easy to use and uncomplicated. On the down side, it's a new site so doesn't have as large a database as some of the longer-established sites but will soon grow with support!

I met my current girlfriend through Dating Direct. Their big advantage is the size of their database so there's a good chance you'll be able to find someone in your locality (in the UK at least). However, the site is quite expensive if you want to remain a member for any length of time. I've also heard rumours that their customer service has gone down hill lately, but they were OK when I used them a few years ago.

To be avoided. Yes, they may have a large membership base but the customer service problems they've been having are horrendous. Loads of people wanting their money back and unable to get it or people just wanting to cancel their account and unable to. If you are in any doubt search for "match.com class action" on Google. My advice would be stick to free sites then you can't be conned by the website (but you still need to watch out for individuals on the site of course).

This site too has a few cases of taking money after cancellation, but nowhere near as many as some of the more notorious sites. The site was redesigned in 2007 and, at least when I tried, you now have to pay to do anything useful so the "free registration" is a bit pointless. I received what looked like messages sent to lots of people suggesting more interest in my profile than there probably actually was.

This site is one of the better ones we've tried. At the time of writing, it has just been sold by ITV at a considerable loss so it will be interesting to see how it develops in future but support seems more professional than most other sites we've tried. A large membership base ensures that there are enough local people but like many other sites annoyingly, and misleadingly in my view, claims to be free but isn't (other than the usual registration and searching).

This is one of the "new generation" of sites, and in fact was probably one of the first, dealing with psychological matching rather than letting people just search based on a photo and a paragraph. As such, it's definitely worth a try and by all accounts gets a good ratio of happy matchees.

This site has a large membership base and, as dating is a numbers game, you would think this is a good thing. However, I received quite a few messages from Africans trying to get me to divulge my email address. The free-versus-paid membership seems a bit strange too - free members can reply to paid members providing an incentive not to join. This site looks like a "get-1-months-money-and-run" site relying on enough new members to keep them going.

This site tries to do the "chemistry" thing by asking about your attitudes to certain things such as money, fashion or romance but isn't restricted to that. It's a very well put together site and, although a tad expensive, has plenty to offer. One slight downside is that lots of people don't seem to have answered the questions truthfully, but that's not the site's fault, although I guess they could be more stringent when reviewing profiles.

Quite a nice looking site with some good points and some annoyances. At the time of writing, I couldn't find a way to turn instant messaging off which meant getting interrupted when using the site. Photo approval took ages too. But apart from that, you can reply without paying and the site has most of the usual features - smiles, kisses, etc.

The profiles are very detailed - good if you want to know lots about someone before approaching them, bad if you don't want to divulge too much and are fed up with typing your details in. A large membership though means plenty of people to pick from and the "frequency of visit" is useful for finding those most likely to respond. The site carries adverts in spite of being a pay site. Overall, does what it says on the tin.

Contrary to its name, this site isn't just for Americans. A well implemented site with some good ideas. I particularly liked the mutual click feature where you express an interest in the other party but they're only sent a list and don't know who likes them. If they then click on you you're both notified. There seem to be a fair few scammers on this site, but plenty of people to choose from.

Waiting for matches based on my "psychological profile" didn't seem to do it for me I'm afraid. The matches I was sent were no better, in fact worse, than I could find myself hunting on a photo and paragraph basis. It's a novel idea to supposedly analyze your personality and interests and find a match based on that, but it seems their algorithm needs improvement. This is a shame considering the site is quite expensive.

I would put this one down a "classy" site. It works the usual way of registering, adding favourites, etc. before you need to pay, but is nevertheless a pay site. Doesn't yet seem to have a huge membership and not many new local members joined each week, but there are enough to be getting on with as long as your age range isn't too narrow. The style of the site, and the idea of recommendation by a friend, seems to attract a good quality of membership.
